Dalla-Dalla anyone?
Local routes are serviced by dalla-dallas (minivans) and, in rural areas, by pick-up trucks or old 4WDs. Prices are fixed and inexpensive (Tsh400 for town runs). The vehicles make many stops and are extremely crowded. Destinations are either posted on a board in the front window, or called out by the driver’s assistant, who also collects fares.
Tanzania's ferries are scenic and relaxing and a fine way to travel. That said, overcrowding sometimes happens, and conditions in general are rather basic. The exceptions to this are the modern Zanzibar ferries. Book first-class for lake ferries well in advance. Train Train travel is slow and scenic; delays are common but on the whole, the trips are enjoyable and both main lines are slowly working to upgrade their services. It's a good idea to bring water and snacks.

Taxis, which have white plates on the mainland and a ‘gari la abiria’ (passenger vehicle) sign on Zanzibar, can be hired in all major towns. None have meters, so agree on the fare with the driver before getting in. Fares for short town trips start at Tsh2000 (Tsh5000 in Dar es Salaam).
